The Waves Quarter of PHY138-Y1Y 2006/07
Waves are
the results of oscillations which convey energy to their surroundings.
Some examples include water surface waves, waves on a string, sound and
light. In this quarter we will study areas of wave mechanics, sound and
optics that have applications or relevance to the life sciences. |

Syllabus
The table
below lists the curriculum and textbook references for the Waves quarter of
PHY138-Y1Y. The textbook is Physics for Scientists and Engineers: A Strategic
Approach by Randall D. Knight, Copyright 2004 by Addison-Wesley. The only
chapters we will use in this quarter are 14, 20, 21 and 23. If you have the
text in separate volumes, Chapter 14 is in Volume 1, and Chapters 20, 21 and 23
are in Volume 3. Topics that are in bold-italics
are direct applications to the Life Sciences. Extra notes may be posted
on this web-site near the time of the lecture. Textbook sections that are
listed below are examinable; those that are not listed below are not examinable
unless otherwise announced.
It is
likely that the listing will change somewhat as the course proceeds. After the class has been given, the
topics and text references will be updated if necessary and a link will appear
in the More column to a
more detailed summary of the class.
