Commercial Mathematics and Science Programs

Some information about the commercial packages available within the department, primarily from the departmental server cluster.

The Physics Department has licenses on the helios/apollo cluster for the three popular packages Maple, Mathematica and Matlab.

Maple

Vendor Site: Maplesoft

Maple is a symbolic mathematics package with graphing and data handling capabilities. It is used extensively in a number of courses.

Our server license permits arbitrary numbers of simultaneous sessions.

Mathematica

Vendor Site: Wolfram Research

Mathematica is another popular symbolic mathematics package with extensive support for visualization and data modeling.

Our server license supports two simultaneous sessions. Please release your session if you are not actively using it.

Matlab

Mathworks

Mathematical computation software with support for various kinds of modeling and simulation, especially when supported by extra modules.

We are currently licensed for:

  • 7 MATLAB sessions,
  • 3 Signal Toolbox sessions.

We have support from two faculty members to bring their licenses into the common pool, providing everyone with much more flexibility for use of this software.

Licensing costs are comparatively modest; so feel free to express interest in other modules, especially if they might have broad usefulness to other groups in the department.

Acquiring this Software

Maple, Mathematica, Matlab and related software modules can be acquired through the Licensed Software Office (LSO). Prices are those negotiated by the University of Toronto and are generally substantially below retail costs.

Please note that Physics Computing Services does not have any special discounts or spare licenses to give you. We source these products through the LSO.
