Geophysics at University of Toronto
Geophysics at the University of Toronto has had a strong international presence for over 50 years in both basic and applied studies. Historically, research conducted here has led to large breakthroughs in our understanding of the mechanics of plate tectonics, mantle dynamics, geodynamics, and geomagnetism. In addition, the development of advanced seismological and electromagnetic techniques for geophysical exploration has produced powerful tools now used widely in the oil, gas and mineral industries.
Our geophysics faculty members conduct research in areas that are varied and highly interdisciplinary. Basic research includes observational, experimental and theoretical studies aimed at understanding the physical processes that govern the dynamics and evolution of the Earth and other planets. Questions being addressed range from the underlying dynamics of planetary interiors to the physics of earthquakes, volcanism and global sea level change. Applied problems include the high resolution three-dimensional imaging of ore bodies, the origin, structure and dynamics of alternative energy sources such as methane gas hydrates, and the development of innovative ways to search for land mines in third world countries.
In addition to research our group is dedicated to training students at the undergraduate and graduate level as well as to training postdoctoral fellows. Presently a number of opportunities for short-term undergraduate, MSc, and PhD projects exist.
