Although the theory is well understood, quantum key distribution has never been used in practice and even experiments have been confined to the laboratory until recently. In March 2002, a group from the University of Geneva reported a "plug & play" quantum key distribution system and demonstrated its use over a standard communication fiber over a distance of 67km between Lausanne and Geneva. In my presentation I will give an introduction to the practical implementation of a quantum key distribution scheme and some of its difficulties and limitations. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Christoph Hebeisen heby@lphys.chem.utoronto.ca Department of Physics University of Toronto 60 St. George St. Toronto, ON Phone +1 416 978 0366 M5S 1A7 Canada Fax +1 416 978 0366 --------------------------------------------------------------------------
