The now focused ion beam enters a spectrometer magnet (analysing filter),
which inwardly bends the beam. The heavier ions are bent less
than the lighter, since they carry more momentum than the lighter ions.
The beam again encounters another focusing slit,
which is calibrated only to allow ions of a certain mass to pass

14C is exaggerated
by a factor of 1012 to
1016 times, for illustrative purposes.
