Arthur Compton won the 1927 Nobel Prize in Physics for his discovery of the scattering of photons by free electrons. In this experiment, the absorption of gamma-rays by materials with various values of Z is measured. The total cross section for Compton scattering is calculated, and a value for the fine-structure constant determined. (The fine structure constant, &alphaQED, is the fundamental parameter of Quantum Electrodynamics.)
(The experiment is currently located in MP244; last write-up revision: January 2008.)
