Abstract

Dissipation is normally a burden for quantum information processing. However, we will show that there are situations where it is an essential ingredient for a protocol to work. We will discuss how to generate bipartite entanglement assisted by dissipation and how to distribute entanglement over distant parties to create the building block of a quantum network. The proposed scenario involves trapped ions in an optical cavity and can be made operative not only in the strong but also in the weak coupling regime. Beyond assisting information processing by dissipation, we will also show that controllable entanglement can arise with the only concourse of white noise. The protocols discussed here can be considered as a proof of principle for a novel approach to QIP where, for certain tasks, the presence of noise is turned into a useful resource performing a constructive role.
