Abstract
Of fundamental importance to understanding the physics of high-temperature
superconductors is the description of the underlying groundstate.
This starting point,
on which any theory must base itself, is at the heart of one of the
major debates in condensed matter physics. Put succinctly the question
is this: are these materials metals once they have been stripped
of their superconductivity?
In this talk I present data from charge and thermal transport measurements
in these materials. These results show unequivocally that the groundstate
in the absence of superconductivity in certain high-temperature superconductors
is NOT metallic. Whether this behaviour is generic remains an open
question, but nevertheless promises a controversial future for this continued
debate.
