To BEC or not to BEC: Bose-Einstein condensation
in a quasi-two-dimensional trap

Time : Tuesday, April 22, 2003 at 12.00 noon
Place : Room MP408, 60 St. George Street

Abstract

In this talk I will discuss Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) in a (quasi)-two dimensional (2D) system of bosons subjected to a harmonic oscillator confining potential and interacting via a repulsive, two-body psuedopotential. I will review the various methods used to investigate the BEC phase in trapped Bose gases, and show how some of the successful approaches in 3D fail to apply to 2D systems. In particular, I will discuss the breakdown of the semi-classical approximation when applied to 2D. Only a fully quantum mechanical treatment of the trapped 2D gas can lead to a self-consistent description of the BEC phase.
