Abstract

The recent discovery of a new family of heavy-fermion superconductors with general formula CeMIn_5 (M=Co, Ir, Rh or their solid solutions) has generated much interest. The ground state of these compounds can be fine-tuned between magnetic order, superconductivity (SC), and a coexistence of the two by varying both pressure and alloy composition. CeCoIn_5, with the highest ambient pressure superconducting transition temperature, T_c, of all heavy-fermion compounds, is believed to be close to a point where the magnetic state becomes unstable in T=0 limit. After reviewing the properties of these compounds, I will talk about our study of phase instability in CeCoIn_5 induced by magnetic field. I will show field-induced restoration of Landau Fermi-liquid state, proceeding in a critical manner. The relation of this phase instability with superconducting state will be discussed.
