SPECIAL OPTICS SEMINAR
FRIDAY, MAY 19TH, 2000

Speaker : Professor Yoshiteru Maeno
Department of Physics
Kyoto University, Japan
Topic : The Physics of Ruthenates:  From Superconductors to Magnetic Insulators
Time : June 5, 2000 at 12:10 p.m.
Place : Room 408, Burton Tower 60 St. George Street / 255 Huron Street

Abstract

In the first part, I will discuss the general trend of the ground states of ruthenates with different layer stacking. A variety of ground states,
ranging from superconductor, itinerant ferromaget, to antiferromagnetic insulator, are stabilized by varying the dimensionality and the crystal
distortion.

In the second part of the talk, I will describe the crystal growth of oxide superconductor Sr2RuO4 and enhancement of its Tc (from 1.5 K to 3 K)
by insertion of metallic microdomains.
