- Summer Research: in most years we have one or two summer research positions for upper-level undergraduates. Usually, you will be expected to have attained a good grade in PHY356 or an equivalent course. Please contact Professor James in good time (preferrably before 31st January) if you are interested. You should also apply for the NSERC USRA program and the CQIQC Undergraduate Summer Research Studentship.
- Research Courses/4th Year Thesis Supervision: If you are interested in taking a Reading Course (PHY371Y1 and PHY372H1, PHY471Y or PHY472H1), a 4th year research course (PHY478H1 or PHY479Y1) or would like to be supervised by Prof. James for your 4th Year EngSci thesis, please contact him in good time (preferably before the end of classes in the preceeding semester) to discuss the possibility.
We usually welcome one new graduate student into our group each year. All applications for MSc and PhD degrees are handled centrally by the Physics Department Graduate Studies office: see here for details (the deadline is usually at the end of January for admission the following September). If you are admitted and decide to come to Toronto, I would be happy to talk to you regarding the the possibility of doing research in my group; please contact me as soon as you can after the start of your first semester in September (I usually will be making commitments by late October).
There are usually one or two post-docs working in our group at any one time, depending on the current funding situation. Prof. James welcomes applications from suitable candidates with (or soon to get) a PhD and a strong record of research acomplishments in theoretical quantum or classical optics or quantum information technology. Please include a CV, list of publications, a 1 page description of you research interests and outlook, and the names and addresses of three people who have agreed to write a letter of recomendation for you.
