Reflection/Transmission animations:

A pulse traveling from a region of low wave speed to higher wave speed.  The reflected pulse is positive.

 

 

 

A pulse traveling from a region of high wave speed to lower wave speed.  The reflected pulse is negative.

 

 

 

A pulse traveling along a string with a free end.  This is the limiting case of when the second string is very light. The reflected pulse is positive.

 

 

 

A pulse traveling along a string with a fixed end.  This is the limiting case of when the second string is very heavy. The reflected pulse is negative.
