Teaching Assistantships, 2013/2014 Fall/Winter Session

Fall Term September 9 - December 3, 2013
Spring Term January 6 - April 4, 2014
Full Session September 9, 2013 to April 4, 2014


DUTIES: Normally tutoring one or two groups of students for one term.

HOURS OF WORK: At least two contact hours per week plus additional duties which may include preparation, problem and test marking, consultation term test invigilation, course meetings, training session  and  possibly  final exam marking.  Between 70 and 140 hours per full session equivalent.


DUTIES:  Pairs of Teaching Assistants lead one or two practical groups of up to 36 students through discussion sessions and guided activities involving apparatus for PHY131 and PHY132.

HOURS OF WORK:  Normally  two consecutive contact hours per group per week, plus notebook marking and training sessions, totalling 49 (one group with no marking), 80 (one group with marking) or 110 hours (two groups). 


DUTIES:  Demonstrating in laboratory classes in first, second and third/fourth year labs.

HOURS OF WORK:  Normally  three consecutive contact hours per week for the term plus report marking,  lab book marking and training session, totalling 50 to110 hours. 


DUTIES:  Marking problem sets, tests or examinations.

HOURS OF WORK:  20 - 50 hours per term depending on the course.


  • QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants are expected to have a sound knowledge and proven ability in Physics and, for tutor, Practicals instructor and demonstrator positions, good communication skills and command of the English language.
  •  SALARIES: The current rate of pay for: UG / SGSI / SGSII / PDF is- $42.05 per hour.
  • CONDITIONS: An Application form is  available on-line (please inquire) or on paper  in the Department of Physics, McLennan Physical Laboratories, Room 301.  Completed applications should be submitted on-line or returned to room MP 301 as soon as possible, but no later than July 15,  2013.  The number of positions is contingent on enrolment. The Teaching Assistant Coordinator shall make any and all offers of employment on behalf of the Department of Physics.  No other offers or notices of outcome of applications are authorised by the Department.  Copies of the CUPE-University collective agreement are available on request.  Department standards and Policies are available in the Department office and in the CUPE, Local 3902 office. This job is posted in accordance with the CUPE 3902, Unit 1 Collective Agreement.
