Basic Topics
  • This is an advanced seismology course that covers a range of possible theoretical and computational topics related to seismic wave propagation, seismic tomography, full-waveform inversion, earthquake sources and fault dynamics, as well as exploration seismology. Detailed topics may vary based on instructors. For the Winter 2021 class, we will focus on computational seismology. We start with a brief overview of related topics in seismology, and then introduce major numerical methods (finite-difference, finite-element and spectral-element methods) used to compute synthetic seismograms. We will also briefly discuss how the forward modelling capabilities can be used in inverse problem as full waveform inversions (FWI).
