PhySU had a packed summer and is off to a strong start this academic year! We kicked off with an Accessibility Services seminar, revamped several committees, and launched our second annual merch design contest. Mid-summer saw the start of our mentorship pilot program, pairing incoming students with upper-years, and the return of our reading groups, where students explore advanced physics topics with guidance from an upper year. In August, our week-long Orientation featured events like board game and movie nights, a scavenger hunt, a student panel, tours of McLennan, and the return of our Liquid Nitrogen Ice Cream during UTSU’s club fair. The semester began with two standout talks: one from an undergrad on their summer research at CERN, and another by Professor Boris Braverman on laser cooling and quantum control. September brought our math primer, first-year study sessions, and laid-back socials like crochet and board game nights. Our October highlights include a grad school info session, our second Meet the Profs dinner, and the upcoming PhySU HallAUween in collaboration with the Astronomy Union, featuring pumpkin carving, haunted demos, and a costume contest.
