Evaluating Methane Emissions from Observations in Southern Ontario

Methane is the second most potent anthopogenic greenhouse gas contributing to global warming, and it has been increasing in concentration at alarming rates. This has motivated the creation of the Global Methane Pledge, where many countries have agreed to lower their anthropogenic methane emissions as a first attempt to slow the rate of global warming. In order to mitigate emissions correctly, we must first know the sources and emissions of different industries and facilities. This talk explores how atmospheric measurements can identify and quantify methane emissions sources, and presents the work being done by the University of Toronto and ECCC to evaluate methane emissions in Southern Ontario.
