The Interaction Between Tectonic Plates and Deep Dense Compositional Piles in Numerical Models of Mantle Convection

The surface motion of terrestrial planets is driven by mantle convection.  Consequently, compositional variations in the mantle may have an impact on the occurrence of plate tectonics.  In the Earth, it is likely that the deep mantle contains regions of iron enriched material that is denser than the ambient silicates.  In this presentation we shall see (with animations) whether the presence of deep dense material enhances or hampers plate tectonics.
