Universal Properties of Spin-Hall Effect

Abstract:

Generating pure spin-current without an accompanying charge-current in semiconductor solid state device is an interesting problem of quantum
transport. For mesoscopic samples, pure spin-current can be generated by spin-orbital (SO) interaction. The flow of spin-current induces a mesoscopic
spin-Hall effect that survives weak disorder. Disorder scattering, however, gives rise to fluctuations in the spin-Hall conductance. In this seminar, I
will discuss some general physics of SO induced mesoscopic spin-Hall effect, presenting universal properties of it in terms of the amplitudes of the
conductance fluctuation. It appears that the universal fluctuation in the quantised spin-Hall regime is independent of symmetry of the Hamiltonian:
this is a behavior totally different from the familiar universal charge conductance fluctuation in mesoscopic conductors.
