Light emission in structured micro- and nano-structures

Abstract

It is well known that the interaction of an emitter with electromagnetic field is strongly affected by the its environment. Spontaneous and stimulated emission can be engineered by specific choice of material and geometry of micro- and nano-structured media surrounding the emitter. In this presentation we discuss different theoretical aspects of emission control in (i) photonic crystals, (ii) plasmonic nano-structures and (iii) micro-lasers. In particular, modification of the emission decay rate, directionality and emission dynamics will be considered in weak and strong coupling regimes in photonic crystals and near plasmonic nano-antenna. Analytical model of Cherenkov radiation in periodic media will be presented. Theory and applications of bistable and multi-stable lasing in coupled micro-cavities will be addressed.
