Photonic crystal slabs for nanoscale optical functionalities

Abstract:

Waveguide-embedded photonic crystals (PhCs), also known as PhC slabs, are known to be among the best structures to achieve active control of light propagation and of radiation-matter interaction. In this talk I shall present recent advances on two kinds of optical phenomena: (1) observation of second- and third-harmonic generation in high-Q silicon PhC slab nanocavities using a low-power, continuous-wave pump in the telecommunication window, and (2) enhancement of light harvesting in thin-film photovoltaic cells by the use of nanoscale photonic structures.
