The challenge is that Math is cumulative and building the foundation is critical. Students often overlook this and have gaps developed and accumulate. For most students, the major concern with math is that it is a cumulative subject. You`ll find that each grade level serves as a stepping stone to the next grade level. Most importantly, without a strong knowledge of the foundational concepts in the preceding classes, students will most likely struggle to grasp the new concepts. For instance, most math tests often check for understanding of previous math concepts in solution steps.
Aside from English, the next most important subject in high school is math. With an excellent grade in math, students have more opportunities to select interesting university programs, such as business, sciences, and engineering. Currently, close to 85% of university programs require applicants to have good math grades.

Students are supposed to start building their math foundational skills in Grade 7 or 8, beginning with integers and fractions, and then progressing to graphing, algebra, and more complex manipulations in high school grades. Unless students build strong foundational skills in math, chances are they will struggle with math year by year, one chapter after the other. The key therefore, is to patch up math foundational gaps with lessons and lots of practice to enable the student to strengthen their understanding.
This is a typical math challenge that most students face. Most students have difficulties translating word problems into equations and variables. The strategy is to have students understand different word problem scenarios within a chapter by having them associate the key elements to the variables and equations.
In Grade 10 math, students will encounter complicated math concepts. involving many parts. Once the students understand which equations to use and how to use them, more than half of the problem is solved!
The strategy we use at QEA is to first show them the “big picture,” instead of diving straight into the technical details of each topic. The “big picture” explains why each part exists and how they all relate to each other. Once students understand this “big picture”, it is easier for them to truly understand the math concept. Applying the equations also becomes much easier.

Regardless of how one feels about the subject, it is undisputable that Math is a necessity in school. Thus, it is important to train oneself in the basic foundations in order to become successful in the later grades, pushing yourself into life after high school. Grade 9 and 10 math is usually a major milestone away from elementary school math, particularly for students who scored 75% or lower. Here, lots of new math concepts are introduced, such as linear equations, quadratics, and geometry.
Some of the challenges in Grade 9 and 10 math include thinking problems and word problems. The majority of students need strong foundational skills to succeed in Grade 9 and 10, especially if they have foundational gaps in the preceding Grades. These gaps may be in understanding integers, fractions, and linear equations. Students must work diligently in these areas in order to proceed to Grade 11 math smoothly.
Grade 11 Math is a major stepping stone in progressing to the Grade 12th. Students at this stage are sometimes confused. For example, many students are not sure whether to take the Mixed level math course or the Academic level math course. I usually advise them to stick to the Grade 11 Academic Math, despite the fact that it requires a bit more work or even a summer math upgrade. This benefit is that the course will open many doors to university programs, ranging from engineering to business. So unless a student is absolutely certain of what he or she wants to do after high school, it is often better to pick the more flexible math option.
Some of the many challenging units in grade 11 Math are trigonometry, exponents, transformation, graphing, and trigonometry identities. The simpler units include series and sequences, and quadratics, which is mostly a review of grade 10 material.
Advanced Functions is a vital course for many students, in that it is a prerequisite for most university programs. Typically, students get to build upon the skills they learned in Grade 11 in Advanced Functions. This includes factoring, graphing, trigonometry, and exponents. Most students often have varying levels of proficiency when taking Advanced Functions. They will find some units like polynomial functions to be simple, while others, such as trigonometry and proofs are harder. Hence, some students describe Advanced Functions as a rollercoaster ride of a course, considering the thrills and difficulties it entails.
Calculus involves two different distinct: derivative and Vector Calculus. The first is a build-up from Advanced Functions, while the second is completely new. Vector Calculus bears is quite similar to Physics when it comes to problem-solving, unlike the Calculus derivative section, which branches out from work done in Advanced Functions. Because of the problem-solving aspects of the Vector Calculus component, many students find it particularly difficult. It also includes algebra, graphing, trigonometry, and logarithms. The vector aspect, on the other hand, is completely new, involving 3D equations of lines and planes.
In order to succeed in Vector Calculus, make sure you are proficient in exponents, factoring, combining rational expressions such as fractions with algebra, and solving equations.
Make sure to pay special attention to the Optimization Unit in Calculus, which includes many word problems. If you struggle with word problems, make sure to prepare for this Calculus unit in particular. As always, make sure to keep your notes organized. Identify the different kinds of Calculus problems. This will help you to clarify the Calculus concepts in this course significantly, and also help to keep track of your progress.
