Arctic Amplification refers to the greater temperature increase in the Arctic in recent decades as compared to the global average, and it is projected to continually intensify in the future warming climate. Both observational and modeling studies have suggested that Arctic Amplification might impact both the weather and climate in Northern Hemisphere midlatitudes; however, the underlying dynamical mechanism is not fully understood. In this talk, I will discuss about our recent work in assessing the impact of Arctic Amplification on the midlatitude circulation using a hierarchy of atmospheric general circulation models. In particular, I will discuss about the role of the stratospheric pathway in linking the Arctic Amplification to the midlatitudes and the “Warm Arctic-Cold Eurasia” pattern in both idealized and comprehensive model simulations.
