Magnetic monopoles have long been the subject of dedicated search efforts;
however, to date no experimental evidence of a magnetically charged object
exists. I will present the first search for magnetic monopoles at the Large
Hadron Collider. The study was performed with the ATLAS detector using an
integrated luminosity of 2.0 fb^{-1} of pp collisions recorded at a
center-of-mass energy of sqrt{s}=7 TeV. As the signature of magnetic monopoles
at ATLAS is very unique, I will elaborate on some of the challenges associated
with their simulation and reconstruction.
