As an introduction, I will briefly review what effective field theory has done for quantum gravity, and what it says about the barrier for a full field theoretical treatment of gravity. Then I describe some recent work which has the goal of circumventing that barrier and possibly heading towards a conventional quantum field theory for the UV completion of General Relativity.
