Information theory in the semiclassical limit25

Black holes in general relativity behave according to the laws of thermodynamics, which has led to a widespread belief — verified in examples — that in quantum gravity, black holes should be have like statistical quantum systems with many component pieces. I will give a broad overview of recent developments by which some statistical and information-theoretic features of black holes can be understood purely at the level of GR+QFT, without needing to know everything about the underlying theory of quantum gravity. Based partially on 2404.16098 and 2501.16437.
