Past and Future Earthquakes in Eastern Canada

Located in the middle of North American tectonic plate, Eastern Canada is not a region where catastrophic earthquake are expected. Historically, however, a number of damaging earthquakes, some as large as magnitude 7, occurred. Decades of monitoring has delimited the most active regions where most damaging earthquakes are likely to occur in the future. Although the seismic provisions of the National Building Code provide some level of protection in recent buildings, the general public is generally unaware of the earthquake hazard and of preparedness measures.
