    Emergency Guidelines

    Know the location of the emergency facilities in your workplace areas and how to use them (emergency phone numbers, evacuation routes and exits, fire extinguishers, first aid stations, chemical spill kits, eyewash fountains). If you don't know, ask your supervisor.

    3.2. First Aid and Eyewash Stations

    • First Aid Stations and qualified First Aiders are posted on the Safety bulletin board located on all floors in the McLennan Physical Laboratories and on the H&S web site.
    • First Aid training (2 days) is offered through the EHS to employees willing to participate in the First Aid program. For registration details, contact Jo-Anne Wurster in the H&S office,  phone 416-978-2231, Room 302.
    • Mikey Defibrillator The McLennan Buidling now has a Mikey Defibrillator which can be found in MP101.  For information about a Mikey Defibrillator please visit http://www.mikeynetwork.com

    Eyewash Stations

    (a) Chemical spills or splashes on the skin or eyes should immediately be flushed with water for at least 15 minutes.
    (b) Seek medical attention.

    3.3. Fire Evacuation Procedures

    The University of Toronto Fire Prevention oversees the Fire safety policy within the McLennan building. Contact Wally Griswold, Fire Prevention Officer at 416-978-5299 or wally.griswold@utoronto.ca

    When fire alarm sounds

    1. EVACUATE the building immediately. This is a MANDATORY University Policy.
    2. DO NOT use elevators.
    3. KEEP CLEAR of the building to permit emergency access.
    4. DO NOT RE-ENTER until authorized by Fire or Police Personnel.
    5. FOR MOBILITY-IMPAIRED persons phone 416-978-2222 for assistance

    3.4. Emergency Response Procedures

    (a) Laboratories & Technical Facilities Shutdown:

    IF TIME AVAILABLE:    When alarm sounds, shutdown or block the output beam from all laser sources greater than Class II. Disable any high voltage or radiation sources that may be a hazard to emergency personnel. Leave the room immediately.

    IF NOT:  Leave on warning lights or signs as you exit building. Inform safety personnel about these hazards. Fire regulations requires that all phone calls, laboratory operations and computer work be terminated and building occupants leave the premises.

    Non-Compliance Procedures
    Emergency response personnel will report any person(s)who fails to leave the building promptly to safety officials. Names to be submitted Physics Health & Safety committee who will forward incident report to supervisory and departmental administration.

    (b)  Office & Lecture Area Shutdown:

    Terminate all office duties, meetings or lecture room duties upon hearing the alarm and leave the building immediately. FOLLOW FIRE EVACUATION PROCEDURES.

    3.5. Personal Safety & Security

    The Department of Physics has available a Safety Audit of the building outlining the various security measures undertaken with the co-operation of the University Police and Community Safety Coordinator at 416-978-1485. WalkSafer program provides campus escorts to all employees, students and visitors after dark. See their website at http://www.campuspolice.utoronto.ca/safety/walkSmart.htm
